Meet Mr and Mrs C’s, the perfect lunch spot you’ve been missing.
Located in the heart of the city centre, the cafe boasts shabby chic charm and offers a quaint escape from the rowdier side of town. With its unlikely location, just off the bull ring next to Wakefield’s infamous Westgate strip of clubs, it seems the café has found the perfect spot, racking in regular customers in no time. Recently voted second place in the Wakefield Express ‘Café of the Year’ competition, it seems owner Dawn has had no problem making her mark in the city.
Running an independent business can be quite the challenge, but in conversation with Dawn she seems more than confident in every decision she’s made for Mr and Mrs C’s. Taking over in May 2018, ‘’the café had been open for approximately 18 months previously,’’ she explains, ‘’so there was some existing custom, but it did take a bit of building.’’ However, as British as ever, ‘’introducing afternoon tea was very beneficial.’’
Buying the lease from the previous owner who had set up the café, that didn’t stop Dawn from putting her own twist on things, as she went in determined for something ‘’different and unique.’’
”It can be difficult to compete with larger chains nearby”

From handcrafted signs and quirky frames on the walls, to the handwritten chalkboard menus behind the counter, every inch of the place radiates charm and character. The café’s tables, worked on by Dawn’s husband and daughter, are made from cable reels and personalised with artwork and stencilling. The café is too double fronted with large windows, creating a very light and air atmosphere with the décor. ‘’This, together with the unique décor and tables makes it very appealing to all age groups,’’ states Dawn.
Not only the décor of the place stands out, but the menu too; a whole page dedicated to vegan options, the café caters for all. Pricing afternoon tea, vegan options available too, at just £10 per person, the menu is also affordable, and stands out from its competition of chain cafes, such as Costa and Café Nero. Not many places in the centre offer such variety at a reasonable price, and that’s what customers want.
‘’It can be difficult to compete with larger chains nearby, but we do have a lot of regular customers,’’ Dawn explains. ‘’Coffee shops in Trinity Walk and the Ridings do not affect us as they are far away enough not to.’’
Mr and Mrs C’s has been a hit on social media too, with almost 1000 followers on Instagram and an abundance of tagged photos, visitors can’t help themselves from taking a snap of their food once it’s arrived.
A rustic look that’s captured the hearts of Wakefield locals, and food that’s satisfied their stomachs, Mr and Mrs C’s is a hit that’s here to stay. Open 9am till 4pm Monday to Friday, and till 5pm on Saturdays, why not check out Wakefield’s cutest café yourself.
